With so much media attention focused on the oil disaster in the Gulf Coast, Americans are quickly learning of the acute impacts this environmental catastrophe will have on their local food. For those of us living outside of the Gulf Coast region, this is a lesson on how substantial our bond with local agriculture is, especially when it comes to what's on our dinner plates.
Kim Severson and Sean Patrick Farrell remind us of one local business model that was developed to protect some urban community's ties to local agriculture. Community supported agriculture is getting an urban makeover in an effort to transform the cuisine of the low-income South Bronx community (showcased in the video below). This model is a superb example of the innovative approaches needed to drive constructive change in the public health our our county. Whether it be a full scale systematic solution or a community based effort, there is little room to refute the major role sustainable local agriculture will play in the future.
