Jamie Kapalko at Salon.com posted this piece about the Terrafugia- which, if my etymological skills serve me right means "Escape the Ground"- a "flying car" looking to land (sorry) in consumers' driveways by 2011. The car, or airplane with retractable wings and small wheels, was recently given an FAA classification of "light sport aircraft" which will allow it to avoid some of the restrictions of typical airplanes. After watching the video on Salon, I'd have to say I'm mildly impressed. However, I'd also have to say that it looks like something a four year-old would draw and that for $200,000 I'd better look as cool as I feel flying over all the suckers stuck in traffic.
