...Or Maybe You Could Lower Tuition

The University of Illinois announced today that Michael Hogan, will take over for B. Joseph White as its President. White stepped down when news of an admissions scandal broke. I woke up this morning to a public radio piece about Hogan, his background, his plan for the University, etc. However, what was not as widely publicized was that Hogan's base annual salary will be $620,000 with an additional $225,000 if he stays at U of I for five years. This is up from White's base salary of $450,000.

I discussed in an earlier post the crisis of the cost of higher education in America and the problems it could cause in the future. With the State of Illinois forcing employees on furloughs and with total estimated costs for an undergraduate at U of I at $31,810/yr. perhaps $620,000 is just a bit much for a government salary. I understand that cutting that in half and spreading it over every student would mean negligible savings for each student, but maybe we should consider, at least, the public perception of raising one government employee's salary while others suffer and young people take on more and more debt.
